If not, you should. A business blog is the perfect marketing tool for Realtors to grow their client base. Realtors can use a business blog to network with buyers and sellers, to showcase houses (even through video), to keep potential clients informed of the real estate issues in the local area, develop critical contacts both locally and globally, gain referral business, and establish authority.

I live in the Metro Detroit area so I have an idea of how bad the housing market is here. But even with the economy the way it is there are still Realtors who are succeeding. Guess why? Yep, because they are blogging! They understand and use blogging as part of their marketing strategy.

Realtor’s seem to have caught on to blogging more so than other service based industries because it fits perfectly into their business model. They have to build relationships (as do other service providers) and a blog helps them do that better.

I came across a few Realtor bloggers that understand and know how to use a blog for their businesses. Hey, I’m a blog developer and consultant - I get excited about these things! Let’s take a look…

Maureen Francis writes about how blogging is a critical part of her marketing efforts and yet there are still people who look down on ‘bloggers’ and blogging for business. She writes…

“But I did not start this blog because times were tough. I started this blog because I am always looking for the best ways to market my client’s homes, a quest we embarked on in 2001. This blog is a part of our innovative marketing plan. We beat most offices in google searches. This helps us to get more eyes on our clients properties. That is something that can make a huge difference with most buyers doing their search for a new home on-line. There is a lot of information in these pages that can help you to do the things you need to do to get your home sold. We are focused on what we can do and how we can deal with today’s market conditions.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Don’t be left behind.

I am Realtor. I sell houses. My blog helps me to do that.”

Her blog helps her do what she does best…sell houses! Business blogging is really another way to market your business and sell your services. Any Realtor or service provider knows that marketing is a daily effort. We should always be looking for the best ways to market our services.

Matt McGee has a great column at Search Engine Land called Small is Beautiful where he recently interviewed a St. Paul Realtor, Teresa Boardman, of the St. Paul Real Estate Blog.

“Most of my business, about 80%, comes from the Internet,” Teresa says. In addition to blogging, Teresa is on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, and other social media sites. Oh, and she also launched a local wiki (but admits she doesn’t have enough time for it). This is not your typical real estate agent. Best of all, her story has lessons for any small business service provider — real estate or otherwise.”

Her blog get around 3k to 5k visitors a week and they are highly targeted visitors. But it’s not just about setting up a blog and writing every day - you have to engage other people. This is where networking and social media comes into play. Find social media sites, other bloggers, and offline events and network!

Speaking of engaging, I came across the San Diego Home Blog written by Kris Berg, a Realtor. She writes a very insightful post on Engaging An Audience and says…

“Why start a blog? What’s the point? The point, of course, is to connect with the consumer, to be where my clients are, and to stay relevant as our society evolves technologically and continues its online migration.”

SO, are you ready to be an industry expert? This is one major reason why Realtors should have a business blog - the ability to establish yourself as an authority or expert within your industry.

Whether it’s fun, clothing, or housing people are turning to the Internet to search for what they want and need. If you are a Realtor and you do not have a business blog then your competition has a huge advantage over you. Bottom line: don’t get left behind.
